anti aging

Billions of dollars are spent every year by those seeking to mitigate the effects of the aging process. Anti aging strategies range from cosmetic surgeries such as face lifts and having extra folds of skin under the eyes removed, to vitamins and supplements and exercise programs of various types.

Many of the most difficult to deal with aspects of aging are the changes in appearance that accompany the process. As skin tissue becomes less elastic, it forms folds and wrinkles, particularly on the hands and face. Cosmetic surgery can alleviate some of these symptoms by stretching and removing tissue to give it a tighter, firmer appearance. Various compounds may be injected into the skin or muscles under the skin to encourage them to tighten, as well.

Vitamins and supplements are sold as anti aging solutions. Most of them seek to replenish nutrients that the body either consumes more rapidly or doesn't hold as efficiently as it did during youth. Some supplements are herbal remedies: some are based on folk remedies and some are based on new research. The use of herbs to combat the signs of aging goes all the way back to ancient Egypt. Olive leaves were believed to have anti aging properties, likely because of the oils contained in the leaves which, when extracted, can help moisturize and rejuvenate dry skin.

Exercise has long been known as an effective anti aging strategy. Regular exercise keeps muscle tone from decaying as quickly as it does in those with a sedentary lifestyle. It also helps maintain bone density and cardiovascular heath. Keeping the cardiovascular system healthy helps the body produce energy, which can offset some of the fatigue that often accompanies aging.

Science is just beginning to understand the power of brain exercise. It has been shown that senior citizens who maintain a healthy intellectual life feel and think better than those who do not. The brain thrives on new information and on being kept in regular use. Not only does this help with the function of the brain on the intellectual and memory levels, it tends to promote good psychological health which can make the aging process far less traumatic than it is for those who neglect their intellectual needs.

The various anti aging products and lifestyle adjustments have differing amounts of scientific evidence to support them. Some are from the field of alternative medicine while others are quite mainstream in origin.
